3 Tips on How to Overcome Shyness

As far back as I can remember, I have always been the shy type at school, social gatherings, and other events that included interacting with strangers. To me, they were like monsters, ready to devour me whole. My shyness caused me to be very cautious about what others thought about me – how I looked or even the sound of my voice. Every ounce of my actions made me very self-conscious. Every year, I kept telling myself that I needed to learn how to overcome my shyness, to know what it felt like to be normal. Time was something that I was depending on to somehow help me change and to teach me how to overcome shyness, but as the years progressed, the only thing different was that I felt even more unfulfilled; not only was I lacking in the love and relationship department, something else was missing.

How do you overcome shyness when almost half of your life was spent shying away from large crowds or speaking in front of an audience, parties, and other social events? How do you transform a timid personality into an approachable and sociable human being? Well, it all starts with you.

Tip #1: Love yourself 

In order for you to learn how to overcome shyness, you have to start by loving yourself. Loving and accepting who we are as individuals can be quite difficult, especially for those who are still going through a phase in life where they have yet to figure out who they are and what their purpose in the world is.

Learning to love you is a process. It may take some time and you may have to try a few subliminal persuasion techniques in order to develop a love for yourself, but the important thing is that you are progressing and learning to accept who you are and all the changes going on in your life. This love can truly improve your self-esteem and mold your personality into a confident and sociable being.

Tip #2: Rejoice in your strengths

Although we may have our own weaknesses (who doesn’t?), our goal should be to continually rejoice in our talents and abilities because these things will become our strengths.

Have you ever been praised for being a good cook, an excellent writer, or a humorous person? How did it make you feel? It felt good, right? Focusing on your positive traits helps you gain knowledge of how to overcome shyness by building your belief in yourself, making your flaws and weaknesses appear insignificant.

Tip #3: Get involved

Go out there and become a part of something, may it be an organization, your community, a sports activity, or a social group. As long as it forces you to come out of your shell to interact with other people, then it is a great way to learn how to overcome shyness – making new friends is just an added bonus.

Being a part of something makes people feel that they belong and that they are important. This feeling of belongingness boosts a person’s self-esteem and gives the assurance that he/she is accepted by others.
